We are made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we are capable of loving, caring, and giving mercy through our own free will. God grants us this freedom, as He desires us to aspire to be with Him for eternity.
With free will comes the possibility of choices that are not morally sound and pull us away from the Lord. Understanding moral acts, virtues, sin, and what God desires for us will help us form a good conscience, allowing us to grow closer to the Lord and develop a relationship with Him out of our own free will.
Knowing and understanding the spiritual and corporal works of mercy is not enough to live a moral life. One must put into practice these works to live an authentic Christian life.
"The mercy of God is not some beautiful idea, but rather a concrete action. There is no mercy without being concrete. Mercy is not doing good “in passing,” but getting involved where there is something wrong, where there is illness, where there is hunger, wherever there is exploitation. "-Pope Francis
